Take a Chance… Take a Cruise

Do you have a few extra vacation days to use up this summer and don’t know what to do? Don’t want to spend a lot of money? Why not a cruise? One of the things that makes Tampa great is the fact that we have a port right downtown. Now, I know what you’re thinking, with all the recent press there’s no way you’re going on a cruise.  Think of it this way, with over 200 cruises in operation currently there are bound to be one or two that have a problem. I recently just got back from a four night three day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico and had not one issue.

And yes, I said cheap. The cruise left out of Tampa’s Port in the Channelside District, which means all I had to do was pay for the cruise (no parking to worry about, no flight to book, and no long drive to be annoyed by).  Now Channelside may not be full of restaurants to try before the cruise, however there is still Wet Willies and Hooters to get your precruise drink started.

The cruise itself was less than $300 for an inside room, and lets face it who spends much time in the room anyways? Once on the cruise don’t worry about spending money for food, the entire ship is all you can eat. THAT INCLUDES ROOM SERVICE TOO.  What it doesn’t include is alcohol. Main focus of the pre-cruise packing, alcohol. Now everyone has their opinion of how to sneak alcohol on the boat but my suggestion is to try to sneak on more than you think you need; some of it is bound to get confiscated. When boarding, security shakes water to see if it’s been tampered with. If you have to buy alcohol on the cruise, prices really aren’t that bad, the average drink was about $8-$9.

If you’re worried about getting bored on the cruise (which, you’re on a cruise, I don’t know why you would be bored, but regardless…) the cruise offers live music, comedy shows, clubs, kids club, daytime activities, a casino, etc. Every cruise is different so do your research and find one that offers a variety of activities you enjoy most.

If you live in Tampa and don’t take advantage of the convenience of a weekend cruise to anywhere in the Gulf you’re missing out. What are you waiting for, book you cruise date, pack you bags, and have a great long weekend.

Pizza for Breakfast

We have all been to a Mexican restaurant and enjoyed some huevos rancheros for brunch, but have you ever been to an Italian restaurant  and enjoyed a delicious pancetta brunch pizza with a farm fresh egg? Well I can say I have thanks to  Bavaro’s brand new brunch menu. It’s also safe to say that this dish will be a massive hit because 8 out of 10 of us that went to brunch ordered it without question.

Getting a big group of us together for brunch is probably the easiest thing to do… let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good meal after a night out or even just relaxing and watching a movie. Brunch to me, means having a cocktail with breakfast and not feeling guilty. Bavaro’s definitely delivered a good deal with BOGO mimosas and glasses of sangria. Considering we were at an Italian restaurant, I opted for the sangria… which hit the spot, not to sweet and not too dry. (They know what they are doing).

Sometimes I get turned off at brunch because the staff is either as hungover as we are… or just lazy because they would rather be at the beach on a weekend morning. I can’t say this was the case for the Bavaro’s staff. They were highly attentive and willing to help us. They even let us order off the regular menu (don’t let them know we told you). Remember how I mentioned most of us order the Pancetta pizza? Well they actually have six different pizza options, two salads, soup and a couple appetizers. Personally, I love a simple and to the point menu because it makes choosing something so easy, plus we knew the plates would be on point! Each pizza is made fresh to order in Bavaro’s brick oven pizza stove which gets up to 400 degrees F. I heard that the stove is actually from Italy and was flown in just for Bavaro’s, so you know this place is authentic.

Our pizzas all came out piping hot and fresh. I can’t say it enough how delicious my Pancetta pizza was…topped with a farm egg, this pizza was made fresh with pancetta, sea salt, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. I could eat garlic on anything! But this time I think the mixture of the fresh pancetta and sea salt is really what did it for me. If you couldn’t tell by know, I highly recommend the Pancetta Pizza.

Another great thing about Bavaro’s is the location. It’s right in the heart of downtown, which is becoming more active every day. You literally can step right outside the restaurant and walk around for a couple of hours.

So next time you are thinking about trying something different for breakfast, make it Italian with Bavaro’s right here in Downtown Tampa.

Good eating,

Champagne? Don’t Mind If I Do!

Friday nights in SoHo are usually known for Happy Hour at Macd’s, HPK Happy Hour, or maybe a low-key movie at Cinebistro. Well this Friday was a TAD bit different. Allison texted me when she was done with work trying to figure out what to do on this quiet, Friday night around 5:30pm. Well, I had just the event to kickstart our night! She picked me up and we met Rob over at The Swann Market  for a Champagne and Wine Tasting Event. The small deli, located near Hyde Park Village on W. Swann Ave is set up like a small deli, however, it boasts a HUGE variety of beers, wines, and champs for everyone’s liking!

photo-25  Under new ownership, this place is on its way to being a great little stop to stock up on drinks before heading out for your weekend festivities. They also have a deli that makes BOAR’S HEAD SANDWICHES!!! YES! Anyways, after chatting with the new owners, we found out that Baily and her husband Chris  are gearing up for a Grand Opening in late June, so stay tuned to hear more about that upcoming event. Let’s rally around this new Tampa hot spot and welcome them into our community as only Hyde Parkers know how!

Food Trucks Galore

So last week, you probably read that Allison, Ryan and I partied down drinking Margaritas in The Park. Well, during our midday break, we decided to head to a SECOND event to satisfy our tastebuds. Our favorite, local Irish Pub, Macdintons, was having themselves an awesome Food Truck Rally. Basically, they close their parking lot down and have a bunch of different food trucks set up shop all around the perimeter of the lot. Then, they have tables and chairs and corn hole set up in the middle of the lot for people to hang and enjoy their food. What’s great about this event at Macdintons in particular is that it is open to families, kids, and pets!

SoHo Food Truck Rally

We made a lap around the lot before we made our decision as to what to eat. Allison and I were ready for some cheesy tots from Hott Mess. We knew that this would not fill us up completely, so Ryan suggested a sandwich from The Dude and His Food. Hott Mess had soooo many delicious sounding options, it was hard for Allison and I to make our decision. We eventually settled on the “Buffalo Chicken Tots” (hold the Bleu Cheese). Then, Ryan grabbed “The Alexandude the Great” from “The Dude”, who was really friendly and willing to help us make a good choice.

The Dude and His Food

When the food was done, we were SOOO pumped to chow down. The cheesesteak from “The Dude” was HUMONGOUS and overflowing with toppings like prime ribeye, lettuce, feta, onions and tomato. The tots from “Hott Mess” were calling my name and I couldn’t wait to get a seat and go at it. Macdintons allows you to bring your food inside, so we ordered ourselves some Tequila drinks from our favorite girl and dug right in. Clearly, the cheesesteak is  meant to be eaten either like a barbarian or with fork and knife because of its size. We opted for the latter choice.

Between the three of us, there was more than enough food to go around, so we ended up with a little bit left over. “The Dude’s” food was exactly what is advertised… “The Ultimate Prime Ribeye Experience”! The tots were AMAZING too! A bit spicy, but that was expected since it was the Buffalo Tots! All in all, it was an awesome day of food and fun and the three of us all agree we will be hitting up the SoHo Food Truck Rally again! Thanks Macdintons for putting on another great event in Tampa!
